This PhD workshop aims to support Ph.D. students in meeting and handling the psychological and emotional challenges that long-term fieldwork can produce. It will be facilitated by Psychologist Jacob Vindbjerg Nissen from Falck Healthcare.

We will discuss how to turn personal challenges into creative and productive sources of anthropological insight. The workshop will be based on participants’ own reflections on emotional challenges experienced or anticipated during fieldwork. Jacob will comment on these reflections in the light of current knowledge on psycho-traumatology and give concrete recommendations for how to protect one’s mental health during fieldwork.

As a preparation, you will be asked to write a brief reflection paper (maximum 1 page) on the emotional challenges that you have experienced – or that you imagine that you may experience – during your fieldwork. The reflection papers will not be circulated among participants, but Jacob will use them to prepare for the workshop. Papers should be sent to Jacob no later than the 5th of September (jvni@falck.dk],

The workshop is open for PhD students who plan to do or have returned from ethnographic fieldwork.
