Description:
This PhD course aims to improve the ability of PhD students to write articles aimed for specific academic journals. To do so, the course offers a series of workshops where the participants and the organizer will exchange tricks of the trade by discussing selected texts on academic writing, exemplary articles picked by the participants as well as the participants’ own drafts. Throughout, the course will focus on the art of advancing an argument, making claims for relevance, and addressing the specific audience and gatekeepers of the journal in question. It will also engage with the differences (or barriers) between national and international publishing.
Aim:
Taking its point of departure in article drafts from the participants, the workshops aim to improve the participants ability to strategically adress the audience and gatekeepers of the desired journal.
Literature:
Pre-readings will be circulated at a later point.
Target group:
The target group is PhD-students in the humanities. Participants will be required to submit a draft of an unpublished article.

26/9 1300-1600: Introduction
In this workshop, we will discuss general guidelines for academic journal publishing, drawing on selected texts on academic writing. The aim is to stress the importance of advancing an argument, making claims for relevance, and addressing the specific audience and gatekeepers of the desired journal.
10/10 1300-1600: Identifying Silent Norms I
In this workshop, we will discuss exemplary articles selected by the participants. The aim is to identify the implicit academic and rhetorical norms of the desired journal.
17/10 1300-1600: Identifying Silent Norms II
In this workshop, we will discuss exemplary articles selected by the participants. The aim is to identify the implicit academic and rhetorical norms of the desired journal.
14/11 1300-1600: Addressing Silent Norms I
In this workshop, we will discuss the participants’ own drafts. The aim is to cultivate the ability to shape arguments and claims for relevance in accordance with the norms of the desired journal.
21/11 1300-1600: Addressing Silent Norms II
In this workshop, we will discuss the participants’ own drafts. The aim is to cultivate the ability to shape arguments and claims for relevance in accordance with the norms of the desired journal.
