The course, C279/04 Personalised medicine, is being offered by the Graduate School of Health, Aarhus University, fall 2022.

Criteria for participation: University degree in medicine, dentistry, nursing, or Master’s degree in other fields and/or postgraduate research fellows (PhD students and research-year medical students). Target group: Ph.D. students and researchers working/planning to work on studies related to personalised medicine

Due to rapid advances in genomics, the “one size fits all” approach to medicine is moving towards patient-tailored healthcare. “Personalised”, “precision”, “targeted”, “tailored”, or even so-called “bespoke” medicine encompasses a multidisciplinary approach to medicine that incorporates an individual’s genetic profile to guide decisions aimed at disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Recommended knowledge for participation: Basics of epidemiology (undergraduate level). Oncology/cancer research knowledge.

Aim: To provide students with an overview on concepts of personalised medicine. The course will be a combination of interactive lectures and group work. Students are not required to complete an exam at the end of the course.

Learning outcomes:

  1. Define “personalised medicine” in disease diagnosis and treatment
  2. Enumerate “omics” and how “omics” can be utilized in routine clinics
  3. Describe the role of epigenetics in personalized medicine
  4. Understand molecular pathology approaches as a tool in personalised medicine
  5. Compare and contrast clinical epidemiology approaches to personalised medicine
  6. Describe “big data” approaches to assess the effectiveness of precision medicine
  7. Identify ethical issues related to personalised medicine in clinical practice and in clinical epidemiologic research

Workload: The full workload of the course is expected to be 24 hours.

Content: Interactive group work and lectures.

Instructors: Britt Elmedal Laursen & faculty from AU and AUH.

Venue: The Victor Albeck Building (1268), Vennelyst Blvd. 4, 8000 Aarhus C.

Participation in the course is without cost for:
