Title:

Outreach and Impact – Communicating Your Research to a Broad Audience

Description:

How do you explain and make your research interesting for scholars outside your research field and for the general public?

How do you turn your 100-pages PhD thesis into a 280-character tweet, a newspaper piece, or a public lecture understandable to laymen?

How do you create a presence on social media?

How do you present your work with a clear voice and confident body language?

If these are questions you are thinking about as a PhD at Arts, we have the course for you! Come join us at the following dates, and learn from experts how you can expand your academic outreach into the public domain, and maximize the impact of your research.

The course consists of three workshop seminars with hands-on exercises.

The first workshop is hosted by Senior Associate Professor at the Danish School of Media and Journalism Steffen Moestrup. This workshop will focus on how to get from abstract research knowledge to one, clear cut message understandable to scholars outside your field of research and/or the general public. During the workshop, you will work hands-on with how to communicate a main point from your own research.

The second workshop is hosted by Associate Professor at Copenhagen University, Gitte Gravengaard, whose area of expertise is research communication. Her workshop will teach you how to set up a social media presence and how to engage with peers and/or the general public via social media.

The third workshop focuses on body and voice skills which are useful in any situation where you have to present your research, including research conferences with peers. Details are yet to be planned.

Aim:

Students will learn about how to communicate their research to a general audience, how to contribute to public debate with their scientific knowledge, how to set up an online presence reaching peers or the general public, and how to project themselves as academics with clarity and confidence.

These are skills that can help young scholars communicate their research to peers and engage confidently in public debate, thus heeding the call for Arts scholars to make visible the relevance and impact of humanities as an academic discipline.
