Title:
Advanced Flow Cytometry

Reg.no: B299/02 is being offered by the Graduate School of Health, Aarhus University, spring 2022

Criteria for participation: University degree in medicine, dentistry, nursing, or Master’s degree in other fields and/or postgraduate research fellows (PhD students and research-year medical students).

Aim: The course provides detailed knowledge of advanced flow cytometry, focusing on state-of-the-art flow cytometry methods, and includes extensive practical hands-on data analysis exercises that covers the most important topics and pitfalls. Thus, the course will provide the participant with a broad understanding of how to design multicolor flow cytometry experiments, how to handle sample material, and how to analyze and present flow cytometry data for publication.

Learning outcomes: The students will learn

  • (i) how to select the optimal flow cytometry related methodology.
  • (ii) how to design and optimize a flow cytometry experiment.
  • (iii) which controls to include.
  • (iv) how to analyze flow cytometry data including critically evaluation of the experimental results.
  • (v) how to present flow cytometry data for publication.

Content:

  • Presentation of
    • o different flow cytometry related applications within biomedical research.
    • o quality controls, sources of error, validation of different flow cytometry methodologies.
    • o optimal panel and experimental design.
    • o analysis and presentation of flow cytometry data high-dimensional data (e.g. tSNE).
  • Practical exercises (hands-on data analysis).
    • o titration experiments and compensation.
    • o quality controls and validation on instrument performance.
    • o analysis and presentation of flow cytometry data, including for publication.
    • o high-dimensional data analysis using FlowJo (incl tSNE).

Recommended knowledge for participation: Some degree of practical flow cytometry experience, completion of the PhD course in Basic Flow Cytrometry or comparable knowledge on basic principles in flow cytometry.
