No. of contact hours/hours in total incl. preparation, assignment(s) or the like: 30

Aim: The course aims to enable students to deliver their science to a non-academic audience, through teaching them how to deliver their information to different groups of people. They will learn how to select an audience for their material and how to define the most relevant information for that audience. They will learn to relate their research to those outside of academic circles.

  • Provide overview of types of outreach and their link to different audience types with different aims
  • Provide tools and strategies for delivering outreach to different audience types
  • Apply knowledge to create and host an outreach event

Learning outcomes: Students should have an understanding of how to:

  • Identify potential outreach opportunities
  • Create content for different audience types
  • Deliver/communicate their research to nonacademic audiences
  • Structuring the content to best deliver their message.

Content: Outreach is more than reaching an audience of interested folks. In today’s society, it is the people least interested in science that tend to inform the future politics of conducting research and applying results. Therefore, reaching larger audiences is more important than ever. More often than not, funding comes with a stipulation of outreach, additional to scientific papers. This course focuses on how to reach different audiences with the same message, from young kids to non-academic adults. The final project is to apply the lesson of the course to create an implementable outreach activity.
Development and delivery of final outreach activity, participation in lectures and exercises

Recommended knowledge for participation: None, but advancement within PhD project would be helpful
