Criteria for participation: University degree in neuroscience, psychology, medicine, musicology, nursing, biomedical engineering and/or postgraduate research fellows (PhD students and research-year medical students).

Aim: The main goal of this online course is to provide a state-of-the-art overview of the specialized field of music neuroscience, including the principal theoretical frameworks, current findings, and methodological tools.

Learning outcomes: The course provides the students with a fundamental overview of the trends and methodologies concerning research in the field of music and the brain. Moreover, it prepares the students to take an interdisciplinary approach to research questions. First, by training them to understand and use different research methods. Then, to develop a desirable attitude for successful creative interactions in research teams. Finally, the students will attain basic practical experience in at least one novel research method and learn how to implement a feasible research plan within the field of music neurosciences.

To obtain credits students will be required to write a learning diary at the end of each day of the course. They will submit the final learning diary of the whole course as the last assignment at the fourth day. The Course leader will read the diaries and decide upon credit assignment.

Content: The course is based on online lectures by national and international experts in the field. The students will be provided with literature and video material selected by the instructors prior to the course, in order to achieve a similar knowledge base across participants. During the course, the students will actively interact with the teachers and with each other during poster sessions, demo and hands-on sessions aimed at familiarizing them with experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation, thereby translating to concrete examples the knowledge acquired during the course. The program will be a mix between lectures on main topics in music neurosciences, covering main findings and theoretical frameworks to illustrate the variety of experimental designs and methodologies and modules consisting of hands-on demos and guided instructions in data analysis using state-of-the-art software platforms. The students are also offered the opportunity to discuss their own research ideas in the form of posters to the relevant teachers during the school days.

Recommended knowledge for participation: Basic biology, neuropsychology and neuroscience. Target audience are international students at doctoral or master’s level. Their topic of interest should be revolving around behavioral and brain science associated with music and sound cognition.
