Advanced course in questionnaire technique and clinimetrics

Criteria for participation: University degree in medicine, dentistry, nursing, or Master’s degree in other fields and/or postgraduate research fellows (PhD students and research-year medical students).

Aim: The purpose of the course is to give participants in-depth knowledge of clinimetric testing of questionnaires.

Learning outcomes: At the end of the course the participant will:

  • Have the skills to complete the process of developing a new measurement instrument
  • Have basic knowledge about item reduction and factor analysis
  • Know how to perform a field test
  • Be able to define, determine and interpret a) validity, b) reproducibility, c) responsiveness and d) interpretation
  • Have an overview of the benefits of modern psychometric methods such as IRT and Rasch analyses
  • Be able to explain the basics of Rasch analysis

Contents: The course is an advanced course in the science of measurements in medicine and is a continuation of the introductory course. Participants will learn the details of how to develop a new measurement instrument and perform a field test, and this is followed by a thorough review of validity, reproducibility, responsiveness and interpretability. Furthermore, participants will learn the basics of item reduction and factor analysis. Lastly, the concepts of modern Rasch measurement theory in questionnaire research will be introduced.
