Please note:

When registering for this course you will be placed on waiting list. When registration deadline has passed you will be informed if you have got a seat on the course.

The course A297/ Advanced R Programming is being offered by the Graduate School of Health, Aarhus University, 2027.

Criteria for participation: Participants are required to have prior experience with R. They should be familiar with writing simple scripts, including at least some of the following: Creating variables and functions, using loops, and subsetting vectors and data frames.

Aim: The course is designed to strengthen participants’ understanding of R as a programming language and to support the development of efficient, reproducible, and well-structured code. The course focuses on programming skills, workflow management, and the use of tools and packages that support coding and reporting. The course does not cover statistical methods.

Learning outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Configure RStudio to improve coding efficiency.
  • Use Git for version control and track changes in code.
  • Apply advanced R programming concepts to write clearer and more maintainable code.
  • Manipulate and visualize data using the tidyverse and R Markdown.
  • Develop, document, and share their own R package on GitHub.

Workload: The full workload of the course is expected to be 30 hours

Content:

  • Day 1: Good practices, project setup, Git/GitHub, and useful AI assistants in coding; advanced programming concepts in R; introduction to R Markdown.
  • Day 2: Data wrangling with dplyr and related tidyverse tools; handling missing values, factors, joins, and merge checks.
  • Day 3: Extended data wrangling; data visualization with ggplot2; strategies for writing efficient R code.
  • Day 4: Introduction to package development and GitHub collaboration; project briefing and project work.
  • Day 5: Project continuation, feedback, presentation preparation, project presentations, and course wrap-up.
