Course Exciting Stuff!

Course description

As PhD students we share many things with each other. We talk about managing our projects, planning our teaching, understanding complex theory. However, we only rarely share the actual stuff we are working with; the artworks, poems, symphonies, films etc. that are the objects of our studies – and maybe also what sparked our initial interest in our fields of study. We therefore invite PhD students in the KLK programme to a one-day symposium that’s all about stuff.

Through a series of short presentations, where PhD students showcase selected objects of their studies, we hope to initiate conversations about the empirical aspects of a PhD project. We encourage presenters to share both excitement and doubt about their work, just as work in progress is warmly welcomed. The symposium is thus also an opportunity to discover both differences and affinities between the projects in the programme – and to initiate conversations about the stuff that we are excited about.

It is possible to participate both with and without presenting your work. The programme will be structured around sessions of two presentations, moderated by a fellow PhD student. If you are interested in or curious about moderating a session, please indicate so when registering for the symposium.

However, we wish to emphasize that the symposium is not a formal academic event, but rather an occasion to get to know more about your fellow PhD students and all the stuff they are working with.

The final programme will be announced after the registration deadline the 11th of October.

Aim/Learning outcomes

• Presenting and discussing the empirical material of PhD projects.
• Receiving feedback and insights from other PhD students working with the studies of art, literature, and cultural.
• Reflecting on the character of the empirical material of your own and others’ PhD projects.
• Investigating intersections between different projects within the PhD programme.

Requirements for participation

• To participate with presentation, you must prepare a 15 minute presentation in English of one or two pieces of stuff (i.e. objects of study) that you are engaging with in your research. After each presentation there will be 10 minutes for questions and further discussion. If you wish to present, please upload a short text (max. 1/2 page) indicating what kind of stuff you will be sharing. Presenters will be rewarded with 0,5 ECTS.

• To participate without presentation, you must of course listen closely to the presentations and engage in discussions in plenum.
