Objectives of the course: The aim of this writing camp is to help PhD students enhance their academic writing skills by providing them with dedicated time, resources, and guidance to work intensively on their writing projects. The course also fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and peer support through structured social and academic activities.

The course will take place at the Horisont Hotel and Conference Center (Agro Food Park, Aarhus N) and will last for three days, allowing students to fully submerge themselves in their writing.

Learning outcomes and competences: By the end of the course, participants will:

  • Improve their strategies for writing and structuring their dissertations or scientific papers.
  • Enhance their ability to present complex research topics in a clear, compelling manner.
  • Gain interdisciplinary insights by learning to merge scientific and literary writing techniques.
  • Build a supportive network of peers and mentors for ongoing academic collaboration.

Compulsory programme:

  • Participation in all scheduled activities.
  • Active engagement in workshops, lectures, and group discussions.

Course contents:

Participating students can expect the following during the course:

  • Allocated writing periods, where students can focus on their individual projects.
  • Workshops and lectures on effective academic writing.
  • Academic and social mixers, and collaborative exercises designed to create a constructive environment for peer support and engagement.
  • Voluntary workshops on peer reviews, writing sprints, group discussions, and more.
  • Voluntary social activities, like board games, short hikes, etc.

Prerequisites:

Priority is for PhD students in their 2nd or 3rd year, with 1st year PhD students allowed if there are empty slots. First-half-year students are not eligible initially.

Slots allow for one-time attendance per PhD tenure, with reattendance available if there are empty slots.

Type of course/teaching methods:

The course will consist of a combination of focused individual writing, shorter lectures, hands-on workshops, discussions and peer collaboration. The teaching methods will focus on active participation and collaborative learning, along with more traditional listen-and-learn lectures.

Literature:

Relevant literature will be provided to signed-up participants before the start of the course, and will consist of academic and literary writing materials.

The course is designed in such a way to allow students to spend most of their time in an environment that is inducive to writing.

Please note that the course will take place over three days, from Wednesday to Friday, with the option of staying overnight at the location (covered by the graduate school). If you need accommodation, please state this when registering for the course.

No show fee:

Course participants on our transferable skills courses, who do not show up at the course or cancel their course participation after the course cancellation deadline (without providing a doctor’s note), may have to pay a no-show fee, unless someone from the waiting list is able to take part in the course instead.

The no-show fee is DKK 1,200 (the price of one ECTS). The no-show fee has been introduced due to many late cancellations, thus preventing people from the waiting lists to have a seat at the courses.

  • Admission to the writing camp is given on a first-come, first-served basis, and confirmation will be sent by email to the participants after the registration deadline.
  • Please be aware that your registration for the course does not necessarily equal your admission to the course. You will receive an email after the registration deadline regarding whether you are admitted to the course or if you are registered on the waiting list.
  • Please note that seats are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.
