The course C142 Proteomics and protein profiling is being offered by the Graduate School of Health, Aarhus University, 2025.
Criteria for participation: University degree in medicine, dentistry, nursing, or Master’s degree in other fields and/or postgraduate research fellows (PhD students and research-year medical students).
Aim: The aim is to give the students an overview of proteomics and the study of complex protein samples. The course will cover the theoretical basis and practical methodology of proteomics, and will also include teaching of metabolomics .
The course attendants will learn how to design and perform proteomic studies and will get understanding of its impact on research within life science and medicine.
Learning outcomes:
- Understanding of the principles of proteomics and metabolomics methodologies, with focus on mass spectrometry (MS)45 based proteomics.
- Knowledge of the value of protein analysis in biomedical research, including advantages and limitations
- Acquired practical experience in 1) lab work in protein analysis and 2) software tools used to analyze proteomics data with regard to MS spectra, protein modifications, pathway analysis etc.
- To be able to interpret, discuss and critically assess proteomics data
- To be able to design studies on protein analysis and proteomics (type of sample, procedures, instruments etc.)
Workload: The full workload of the course is expected to be 45 hours
Content: The four-day course focus on mass spectrometry based proteomics and how it can elucidate physiological phenomena and to discover protein biomarkers. The area of metabolomics is also covered. The course contains lectures, laboratory experiments, computer exercises, an individual project and journal club. The focus will be on protein profiling of complex mixtures of proteins and the course covers; sample preparation, protein and peptide separation techniques (gel electrophoresis and chromatography), mass spectrometry and data evaluation. Examples will foremost be from clinical protein research.
Instructors: Johan Palmfeldt, Jasper Carlsen, Helle Just, Peter Bross, Stine Christensen, Trine Rasmussen
Venue: Molekylærmedicinsk forskningsenhed (MMF), Science Center Skejby, Brendstrupgårdsvej 21, 8200 Aarhus N.
Participation in the course is without cost for:
