Description

A course in the text editing software LaTeX (Overleaf) tailored to PhD students working in linguistics. Students from other branches of the humanities can also benefit from this course.

The course gives a basic introduction to LaTeX and to specific functions that may be relevant for PhD’s writing their thesis on, e.g., language related projects.

Aim

The purpose of the course is to give the PhD students a basic understanding of how to write a paper/thesis in LaTeX using the online texteditor Overleaf.

The course introduces the PhD students to how to get started setting up a tailored LaTeX document, as well as, giving them experience working with templates.

It furthermore introduces relevant packages and functions for text-formatting linguistic examples (syntax-trees, glossing, CA transcriptions etc.), and gives the students the tools and knowledge necessary to be able to troubleshoot problems with the code (e.g. Stackoverflow, Overleaf’s documentation, package documentation etc.).

The course teaches the student to structure a paper/thesis in LaTeX in a clear and approachable manner.

The course will consist of short lecture format but mostly it will be a workshop where the student will gain independent skills with using LaTeX.
