The course P256/05 Advanced course in questionnaire technique and clinimetrics is being offered by the Graduate School of Health, Aarhus University, fall 2024.
Criteria for participation: University degree in medicine, dentistry, nursing, or Master’s degree in other fields and/or postgraduate research fellows (PhD students and research-year medical students).
Requirements for participation: Introductory course in questionnaire technique and clinimetrics or similar courses. Knowledge of basic statistical concepts is advantageous but not a requirement, and coding in statistical software is not part of the course.
Aim: The purpose of the course is to give participants in-depth knowledge of clinimetric testing of questionnaires and how to interpret relevant statistical output.
Learning outcomes:
At the end of the course the participants will:
- Have the skills to complete the process of developing a new measurement instrument
- Have basic knowledge about item reduction and factor analysis
- Know how to perform a field test
- Be able to define, discuss and interpret the measurement properties of a) validity, b) reproducibility, c) responsiveness and d) interpretation
- Have an overview of the benefits of modern psychometric methods such as Item Response Theory (IRT) and Rasch analyses
Workload: The full workload of the course is expected to be 34 hours
Content: The course is an advanced course in the science of measurements in medicine, and is a continuation of the introductory course. Participants will learn the details of how to develop a new measurement instrument and perform a field test, and this is followed by a thorough review of validity, reproducibility, responsiveness and interpretability. Furthermore, participants will learn the basics of item reduction and factor analysis. Lastly, the concepts of modern IRT and Rasch measurement theory in questionnaire research will be introduced.
Course exercises introduces outputs from real datasets, and participants are expected to interpret and discuss the results. No coding is required, however, Stata and/or R code will be provided for participants own use.
