Course Public and patient involvement in health research

The course P264/05 Patient and public involvement in health research is being offered by the Graduate School of Health, Aarhus University, fall 2023.

Criteria for participation: University degree in medicine, dentistry, nursing, or master’s degree in other fields and/or postgraduate research fellows (PhD students and research-year medical students).

Recommended knowledge for participation: Conducting or considering a project using patient and public involvement in health research

Aim: The aim of this course is to introduce the concept of patient and public involvement in health research and acquire participants a science- and theory-based understanding of patient and public involvement in health research. The course will increase the participants’ ability to identify and increase the value of patient and public involvement in health research by suggesting how patient and public involvement in health research could optimally be a part of their own study and which implications would be important for practice.

Learning outcomes: 

• Summarise the theory and practice of patient and public involvement in health research in the research cycle
• Assess different approaches of patient and public involvement in health research relevance and applicability in various study designs
• Take an analytical and critical view on the processes and potential outcomes of patient and public involvement in health research
• Plan, apply, and evaluate patient and public involvement in health research in own study

Workload: The full workload of the course is expected to be 69 hours.

Content: The course will provide a key overview of current trends and impacts of patient and public involvement in health research. The theory and practice of patient and public involvement in health research will be addressed based on elements in the research cycle: identifying and prioritising, commissioning, designing and managing, undertaking, disseminating, implementing and evaluating impact. The course introduces different approaches to patient and public involvement in health research: consultation, collaboration and user controlled research and will discuss how these approaches can be applied at each stage of the research cycle.
