Transnational streaming platforms’ proliferation and growing success within a larger on-demand driven media culture is currently changing the television industry at a high speed. The transformations affect both the market, the production culture, the publication and communication of content, and the usage. This course will take the changes within the publication strategies as its point of departure in the discussion of how to understand television in the on-demand media culture. Back in 2000 John Ellis famously named the discipline of scheduling “The last creative act in television”. To schedule is to put together a time-structured editorial product according to certain principles and with a number of communicative and commercial functions. Scheduling has been a cornerstone in television production for years, but what happens to this function as the time-structure of television is being supplemented or even replaced with the space-structure of an interface? Other relevant questions to ask are what strengths and weaknesses the private and public television providers experience, and to what degree user-data and personalisation are effecting the production and publishing of television. And last, but not least: which methods to use when we want to study television across traditional and new platforms?

The format of this PhD course is a masterclass which includes lectures, individual presentations, feedback, and group discussions. The following scholars will participate in the masterclass: Professor Hanne Bruun (Aarhus University), Professor Catherine Johnson (University of Huddersfield), Associate professor Petr Szczepanik (Charles university - to be confirmed), and Postdoc Julie Münter Lassen (Aarhus University).

The participants are welcome to take part in the research seminar, which will take place on the 15th and 16th of June (one and a half day). For the seminar invited industry experts and scholars will present and discuss their ongoing work on publication strategies, specific genre developments, and target group issues within the field of public service television.

For preparation the participants are asked to:
- Read a selection of relevant texts (to be announced)
- Prepare a short project presentation (approximately 10 minutes) which is to be delivered during the masterclass
- Prior to the course hand in a written project description (5 pages) OR a draft for an article the PhD student is working on (maximum 7,000 words).

Participation in the masterclass is free of charge, but the PhD students must cover their own travelling costs and accomodation. This also goes for the seminar.

Aim:

- The PhD students’s understanding of the affordances of television as a medium and the changes to the television industry in an on-demand driven media culture.
- Present and discuss one’s project regarding theory, methods, and/or results.
- Receive feedback from experts within the field.
- Participate in an ongoing discussion with experts as well as peer PhD students.
