Target group:

Ph.d. students at Arts, not mandatory.

Admission requirements:

Students who have completed the Ph.D. course “Research integrity and ethics” can apply for admission. Admission is approved by the course leaders. Participation requires that the doctoral student would like to discuss and rethink an ethical challenge in their current research. The workshop is composed of the ethical challenges which the doctoral student brings forward and is based on the premise that the student wishes to co-think about other students’ ethical dilemmas.

Facilitators:

The workshop will be facilitated by teachers from the Ph.D. course ”Research integrity and Ethics”. Lotte Meinert and Jette Kofoed are course leaders and will draw in other teachers according to needs.

Teaching approach:

The nature of this offer is an actual workshop lasting six hours. There will be conversations in plenary, walk-and-talks, small group conversations and co-thinking across ethical dilemmas to showcase differences and similarities.

Language:

The language spoken during the workshop will be English or Danish depending on the participants’ preferred language.

Place:

The workshop will take place at campus, Aarhus.

Background:

During these years we notice an increased focus on research integrity and ethics. This involves an increased need for reflection and feedback about ethical issues in PhD projects within Arts. This need sometimes exceeds what can be covered and expected in the ordinary supervision relation. The need for is also evident in the PhD courses on ”Research integrity and ethics.” Here it is clear that more students wish to continue the conversations about ethics and research integrity after the course has ended and their PhD projects proceed.
This workshop is a possibility for the continuation of such conversations when new ethical challenges and frustrations play out, in students’ own work, collectively and principally.

Content:

”Mind the gap” refers to the distance between the train and the platform. The distance we have to step across to avoid falling. When we call this workshop ’mind the gap’, it is meant to create a collective space for discovering how we might translate the knowledge we have about ethics into research practice. We create, in other words, a break during which we can consider how to proceed without falling. This we do through engagement with real dilemmas, joys and challenges in own research projects.
As mentioned, the workshop is a continuation of and draws upon the understanding of ethics and research integrity introduced in the PhD course “Research integrity and ethics”. This also goes for the basic ideas about integrating every participant’s concrete and ongoing ethical challenges and dilemmas.

The offer is this: with this workshop we take one more step and create a possibility for delving into more concrete and practical research ethical challenges, which one might face.
We offer a space where we can search the corners of different dilemmas together, where we have an option to listen in and make suggestions to others’ challenges and ways of handling them. Each hold the responsibility for making decisions and taking the next steps. It is thus possible in this workshop to air and consider a challenge, one might be stuck with and thereby be able to move on with the work.

Application: ½ page describing the current ethical challenge(s) you are facing in your research and why you would like to be in a conversation with others about these.

Preparation - after admission in workshop - deadline for upload of paper is 15th February 2023:

Send 3-5 pages in which you expand on the ethical challenges you are facing. Also sketch a short intro to your project (research questions, knowledge ambition, methods/methodolology, theory), is you project part of a larger project, how is it funded and are you writing a monograph or article-based dissertation.
