Description:

Linguistics is undergoing a quantitative revolution. Among the many changes that are happening, there is a dedicated push towards more Bayesian methods, which offer many advantages over standard frequentist methods, such as the ability to incorporate prior information in a more explicit fashion. The way Bayesian models are implemented in R it is also much easier to prevent the notorious 'convergence failures' that affect many mixed model analyses conducted with the widely used lme4 package. In this course, you will be introduced to the brms package, a highly flexible tool that allows fitting a large range of models. There will be a mixture of theory and hands-on sessions, ultimately geared towards enabling you to fit your own Bayesian models. Materials and installation instructions will be distributed a few weeks prior to the beginning of the course. Rudimentary knowledge in R, the tidyverse, and linear models would be preferred, but it should be possible to attend much of the course without it. Attendees who feel that they want to refresh their knowledge in these prerequisite topics can contact me in advance for guidance about how to prepare. The workshop will be held for two full days.

Target group:

Most relevant to early or mid-stage PhD students, but the workshop will be appropriate for all PhD students in the field of linguistics who do deal with quantitative data.
