The course, C243/07 How to get published, is being offered being offered by the Graduate School of Health, Aarhus University, autumn 2021.

Criteria for participation: University degree in medicine, dentistry, nursing, or Master’s degree in other fields and/or postgraduate research fellows (PhD students) and research-year students.

The course targets PhD students across all GPs of the Graduate School of Health. The participants are required to have produced a draft manuscript based on their own scientific work (quantitative methodology is given preference over qualitative methodology due to the experience of the instructors) prior to the initiation of the course.

Application: In order to apply for course participation, you must:

  1. Sign up for the course via PhD Course Management
  2. Submit an abstract (max. 250 words – in English) based on the draft manuscript described under criteria for participation
  3. Submit a short application (max. 500 words – in English) describing why you wish to participate in the course

Both abstract and application must be submitted to course secretary, Annette Poulsen, annette@au.dk no later than 2 weeks before application deadline.

The participants will be chosen among the applicants based on an evaluation of the abstracts/applications. Note that applicants using quantitative methodology in their research are given preference over applicants using qualitative methodology (due to the experience of the instructors).

Aim: The aim of this course is to improve the participants’ chances of publishing the results of their research in international peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Learning outcomes: After the course, the participants should:

  1. Have a basic knowledge of all aspects of the publication process
  2. Have improved their writing abilities
  3. Have learned how to perform peer-review

Altogether, this will increase the participants’ chances of publishing their scientific work.

Content: The course will focus on improving the participants’ draft manuscripts (see “Criteria for participation”). These drafts will be discussed in detail during workshop sessions (groups of 4 participants). On each of the three days, there will be two inspirational lectures given by the faculty or invited guests – one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Some of the themes of the lectures will be as follows: “Ethical aspects of publishing”, “Writing good cover letters, abstracts and appeals”, “Choosing a target journal”, “How to peer-review manuscripts”, and “Nurture your publications”.

Between the course days, the participants must work on their draft manuscripts and review three of the other participants’ manuscripts, providing written feedback.
