The course, C240/06 Mindfulness-based interventions in the clinic - background, methods, and application, is being offered by the Graduate School of Health, Aarhus University, autum 2021

Criteria for participation: University degree in medicine, dentistry, nursing, or Master’s degree in other fields and/or postgraduate research fellows (PhD students and research-year medical students).

Aim: The aim of the course is to provide students with fundamental background knowledge of the history and methods of modern evidence-based mindfulness-based interventions as well as to give a more general introduction to stress and stress reduction in the context of neurophysiology. In addition, the course will present and discuss different clinical applications of mindfulness programs and recent findings of psychological and neurobiological changes following mindfulness-based interventions. Finally, the course will raise the debate of “best practice” for future implementation of evidence-based mindfulness-based interventions in modern healthcare, and in society.

Mindfulness:
Mindfulness research is expanding, and mindfulness has become a $1 billion industry. Evidence-based mindful training for individuals, schools, hospitals and businesses are provided by Danish Center for Mindfulness, Aarhus University in collaboration with Brown University. This course examines mindfulness from different angles such as medicine, public health, neuroscience and humanities, in order to understand the background, methods and application through rigorous research.

Learning outcomes: After completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Describe the historical foundations of modern evidence-based mindfulness-based interventions
  • Describe the physiological stress-response and discuss its role in health and disease
  • Explain the role of neuroplasticity in psychological interventions
  • Describe and discuss the use of evidence-based mindfulness-based interventions in different clinical contexts
  • Discuss current findings of changes in brain structure and function
  • Debate the quality of a) current mindfulness research, b) formal mindfulness training standards, and c) mindfulness programs available to the public
  • Reflect on “best practice” strategies for future implementation of evidence-based mindfulness-based interventions in modern healthcare and society

  • The history of modern mindfulness practices – from Buddhism to modern science and healthcare
  • Methods of modern mindfulness practice
  • The neurobiology of stress and stress reduction
  • Mindfulness-based therapy
  • State of the art cognitive and affective neuroscience on mindfulness
  • Future directions and closing debate
