As researchers, we are given the added challenge of reaching outside of academic circles to make an impact, raise awareness, or inspire others. Today, in the era of misinformation, delivering targeted, effective content and reaching beyond the ivory tower is more important than ever- and many funding opportunities come with an expectation of outreach, additional to scientific papers. There are countless ways to achieve outreach, but these initiatives are most effective when carefully designed to reach the target audience through content accessibility. This course focuses on how to adapt the same message to different audiences. We will discuss outreach platforms (social media, events, popular science, etc), how to design and structure audience- and platform-specific content, and how to identify value and success of an outreach initiative. The final project is to apply the lessons of the course and design an outreach activity which will be presented to the course (and where possible implemented).

Objectives of the course: The aim of this course is:

The course aims to enable students to deliver their science to a non-academic audience, focusing on different groups and platforms. They will learn how to select an audience for their material and how to define the most relevant information for that audience. They will explore different outreach methods and platforms and identify which is best suited to their content, style and target audience. They will learn to relate their research to those outside of academic circles.

- Provide overview of types of outreach and their link to different audience types with different aims

- Provide tools and strategies for delivering outreach to different audience types

- Apply knowledge to create an outreach event

Learning outcomes and competences:
Students should have an understanding of how to identify potential outreach opportunities, create content for different audience types and platforms, and deliver/communicate their research to non-academic audiences. They should have an understanding of structuring the content to best deliver their message.
