Course Improve your research - Academic search, data management and scholarly communication for PhD students

The overall aim of the course is to strengthen the general academic skills of first year PhD students at the Faculty of Arts
In order to help the student get a comprehensive view of the research within their field, the two-day course will give the doctoral student and understanding of how to navigate digital resources, how to conduct an academic search, and how to use the tools available to follow the latest research.
To better understand the characteristics of academic publishing, we discuss different aspects of scholarly communication, including what to consider when publishing in Open Access, how to handle copyright issues, and the challenges of the peer review process.
The course will also give insights into how data management supports research projects and give an understanding of current policies and principles. We will think through workflows, how to make data management plans, and how to apply in practice the general rules of FAIR data management.

The course will cover the following areas:
• An overview of the Royal Library’s facilities and services.
• An introduction to various academic databases, reference books and full-text digital resources.
• How to find the latest research, and how to get automated updates on specific academic areas (amongst others, we cover Open Access and institutional repositories).
• An introduction to tools for monitoring searches, journals and citations.
• Different aspects of scholarly publications and publication strategy.
• Citing and referencing
• Data management practices with emphasis on FAIR principles.
